Introduction
Welcome to ecohome! We value your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal information. This privacy statement explains how we collect, use, and share your data when you use our app and related services. It also explains your privacy rights and how the law protects you. By using ecohome, you agree to the practices described below.
Information We Collect
1. User-Provided Information
We collect the following information when you perform different actions in the app:
- When you sign up:
- Your household name and profile details.
- If you sign in using email and a one-time passcode (OTP), the email address to which we send the passcode.
- When you add an item to your inventory:
- Item Details such as name, description, barcode, images, state, category, frequency of use and your intent to share, rent, sell, or donate the item.
- When you share, sell, or arrange collection of an item:
- Contact details such as email address and/or phone number and a physical address for collecting or returning the item.
- Contact Preference: date and time when you prefer to be contacted and preferred mode of contact.
- Contact information of the person you want to share an item with.
- When you update your profile:
- Your default contact information and preference, used when you have not set different details for a specific item.
- Your household name and your photo.
- Goals such as carbon footprint reduction and money saving.
- If you use insurance-related features: information you choose to provide about your home insurance, such as your insurer or policy details.
Automatically Collected Information
We may also collect information automatically when you use the app, such as:
- Device information such as device type and operating system.
- Profile information at signup such as first name, last name, and email address.
- App usage data such as last login and features used.
- Limited technical signals (for example, a hashed representation of your IP address and device/browser) used for security and anti-abuse.
How We Use Your Information
We use the collected data for the following purposes:
- Sharing Items: when you share an item with a contact, we notify them via email or SMS using the provided contact details. When users view items you shared, they see your name and a small profile-photo icon so they know who shared the item.
- Inventory Tracking: we catalog and store your items along with their images to help you keep track of your belongings.
- Authentication: if you choose email sign-in, we use your email address to send a one-time passcode (OTP) to verify your identity and secure your account.
- Location-Based Features: your location is used to enhance your experience, such as auto-populating address fields and showing nearby donation opportunities by approximate area.
- Personalization and recommendations: to provide contextual suggestions that help you save money or reduce your carbon footprint, including insurance-savings estimates and resale or donation suggestions.
- Automated and AI processing: we use automated tools and trusted third-party AI and cloud providers to process photos and documents you submit (for example, to read receipts, identify items, and generate item descriptions or price estimates).
- Community Product Images: if your household opts in, contributed product photos may be screened, moderated, and shared as the representative image for a product so other users can identify it.
- Service operation, analytics, security, and legal compliance.
Photos, Documents, and AI Processing
Many ecohome features rely on images and documents you provide, including item photos, receipts, and insurance or warranty documents. To make these features work, we use automated processing and trusted third-party AI and cloud providers to extract text, recognize items, and generate descriptions or estimates. These providers process your content under contract and only to provide the service to us. Please avoid including personal information you do not wish to process in the images and documents you submit.
Community Product Images (optional)
ecohome offers an optional feature that lets your household contribute product photos to a shared product catalog so other users who own the same product can see a real photo of it.
- Opt-in, off by default, set at the household level, and can be turned off at any time.
- When opted in, a photo of a barcoded product may be shared publicly within ecohome as the representative image for that product and shown to other users who have the same product.
- Before any contributed photo is shared, it is automatically screened to detect and reject images containing people or faces, receipts, documents showing a name or address, or other personal information, and it is reviewed by a human moderator. Only approved photos are shared.
- Your name, household name, profile photo, and account details are not displayed with a contributed image. A contribution is associated with your account internally in a de-identified form only to credit rewards and prevent misuse.
- You can stop contributing at any time and may request removal of a contributed photo by contacting support.
Insurance Savings Estimates
ecohome may estimate potential home-insurance savings based on smart-home or other devices detected in your inventory and, if you provide it, information about your insurance. Where helpful, an estimate may reference your insurer and offer to help you prepare a discount request to submit to that insurer.
- We use your inventory/device data and any insurance details you choose to provide to generate these estimates.
- Estimates are informational only, are not guaranteed, and depend entirely on your insurer’s own terms. ecohome is not an insurer, insurance agent, broker, producer, or adjuster.
- We do not sell your insurance information, and we share it with third parties only as described in this policy (for example, AI/cloud processors that help generate the estimate).
- Any claim or discount request you submit to your insurer is your decision and goes to your insurer, not to us.
Selling Your Items on Third-Party Marketplaces
ecohome offers an optional feature that lets you list your own items for sale on a third-party marketplace (initially eBay) using your own marketplace account.
- If you connect your eBay account, you authorize eBay through eBay’s own sign-in. We store the resulting access credentials (tokens) in encrypted form so we can create listings on your behalf. We do not receive your eBay password.
- When a listing is created, we transmit listing content to eBay — including the item title, description, photos, condition, quantity, and price. This content becomes publicly visible on eBay.
- Photos you list may inadvertently contain personal information; please review them, because once published on eBay they are public and governed by eBay’s own terms and privacy policy.
- We do not receive payment for your sales; buyers pay you through the marketplace. You can disconnect your marketplace account at any time, which stops future listings.
Donating Your Items via ecohome.gives
You can mark items for donation. Items you list for donation are made available on the ecohome.gives portal, a separate nonprofit platform, where registered nonprofit organizations and their volunteers can view available donations and arrange collection.
- When you list an item to donate, nonprofit organizations and volunteers can see item details such as the name, description, photo, category, and the approximate area — not your exact address.
- We do not automatically share your name, home address, email, or phone number with volunteers or organizations.
- To arrange a handoff, a volunteer can start an in-app chat with you. You decide whether to respond, what information to share, and where to meet — for example, a public or common location or a place of your choosing. Any address or contact details are shared only at your discretion within that conversation.
- Messages in these conversations are stored to operate the service. You can stop offering an item for donation at any time.
- ecohome.gives is operated as a nonprofit (501(c)(3)) platform. ecohome does not issue tax receipts or valuations for donations.
Referral & Partner Program
ecohome runs a referral/partner program in which a partner (for example, a real-estate agent) may share a co-branded link or code that you can use when you sign up.
- If you sign up using a partner’s referral link or code, we record an association between your account and that partner, along with status and timestamps. We also store hashed technical signals (such as a hashed IP and device/browser string) solely to prevent abuse.
- Partners receive only aggregate, anonymous results — such as how many people signed up or became active. Partners do not receive your name, email, address, inventory, or any individual activity.
- When you are referred, we show you a notice identifying the partner and let you dispute or remove the attribution.
- Partners do not message you through ecohome; any communications you receive about the program come from ecohome.
Data Sharing and Third-Party Services
We do not sell user data. We may share limited data with trusted third-party service providers solely for app functionality, and with third parties you direct us to interact with. These include:
- Analytics services (e.g., Firebase Analytics) and crash reporting (e.g., Firebase Crashlytics).
- Cloud infrastructure, backend, and push-notification services.
- Third-party AI and document/image processing providers used to read receipts, identify items, and generate descriptions or estimates.
- Third-party marketplaces (for example, eBay) when you choose to list items for sale, as described above.
- The ecohome.gives nonprofit portal and its registered organizations/volunteers, when you choose to donate items, limited to the information described in the donations section.
- Referral partners, limited to aggregate, non-identifying results only.
- These third parties are contractually obligated to handle data securely and only for specified purposes.
Approved community product images are shared with other ecohome users as catalog images for the relevant product. We do not display your identity alongside them.
Security Measures
We take every step available to protect your data from unauthorized access, loss, or misuse, including securing our endpoints, encrypting data in transit and at rest (including stored marketplace access tokens), and implementing data-retention practices that minimize stored user data.
Your Choices
- You can review and update your contact and contact preferences in the My Profile screen of the app.
- You can review the list of contacts you have shared an item with on the item details page.
- Community contributions: you can turn household photo contribution on or off in Settings, and request removal of a contributed image by contacting support.
- You can disconnect a linked marketplace (eBay) account at any time.
- You can stop offering an item for donation at any time, and you control what you share in donation chats.
- You can dispute or remove a referral attribution.
- Opt-Out: you can opt out of certain data collection and sharing practices by adjusting your app settings or contacting support.
- If you have any concerns, contact our support team at [email protected].

We may update this privacy statement as needed. Please check back periodically for any changes. We review and update these policies periodically as our features evolve.
